How To Give Your Blog A Bit Of Style!

Now that you have this great little space, it's time to make it all your own and give it a bit style! One of the great things about blogging is that you get to make your blog to fit you- your personality, your style, your vision of beautiful! You have the ability to create something wonderful both in content and design, you can use both to create a wonderful blog! The design of your blog is the first thing people see when they stop by to visit so the main goal is to make your blog inviting while still staying true to your style!

Giving your blog a bit of style does not mean you need to pay a designer or go flashy and over the top it simply means taking what is important to you in the design and making it come to life! There are plenty of ways to get your blog design to where you would like it to be!

First, you will need to decide on your overall design goal- what exactly are you looking for? A scrapbook type design, a fun look, an elegant look. If you narrow it down, it will make your choices easier later!

Next, decide how you will obtain this concept! This is much easier than it may seem. There is no need to stick with a basic Blogger templates or Wordpress themes when designers all over offer beautiful, free templates and themes! So decide if you want to just change the background of your blog or switch to a new template or Wordpress theme!

Third, do some research! You basically have 3 options: 1)You can find a free background for your blog 2) You can find a custom premade template for your blog, or 3) you can have your blog custom designed.

So lets go over each option:

FREE BLOG BACKGROUNDS

Free blog backgrounds are a great way to give your blog a bit of style! They are very easy to install and you can change them as often as you would like- so fun! The internet has some great resources for blog freebies and so do we, check out our resources for:

CUSTOM PREMADE TEMPLATES/ WORDPRESS THEMES

If you are looking for something a little more custom you can always go with a custom premade template. Custom premade templates have a bit more to offer in that they are more like a full design! There are plently of styles and layouts, you just have to find what fits your needs. They usually come with a lot more extras like post dividers, signatures, and custom font- just to name a few! With custom premade templates you will find that some designers offer free custom templates and some offer them for a fee but remember on the ones that do charge a fee you are usually getting it for less than half of what you would pay for a custom design! Browse around and see what you like most before deciding. Check out our resources for:

Robin,

You would have to go into the style.css of the template you use to change those items. I'm not familiar with that template, do they have a help forum? You can usually get a lot of help from your template designer. I know with the templates I do design with editing for sidebar sections is all done through the style.css page.

My blog is oh-so-vanilla. Design is just not my thing. I'd love to know now to add customization in the sidebar. I have basic text. But how do I add my own heading buttons, fonts and colors? I use Prose for WP.

Great post :) I've seen a lot like this lately and it's awesome that people are helping bloggers make their default templates look better.
