How Much Should I Charge For Ad Space On My Blog? A Guide To Pricing Ad Space!

So you have decided to monetize your blog and start offering ad space or sponsorship spots on your blog but the question is: How much do I charge for ad space on my blog? Deciding how much to charge for ad space can be very tricky. Every blog is different, so every blog will charge different prices for ad space- but how do you determine what that price will be?

The truth is there is no set in stone price guideline to go by when it comes to how much you should charge for ad space on your blog. Even if you do your research you will find that you get different answers to this question so your best bet is take some time, do some research, and investigate where your blog stands before deciding on a price to charge for ad space.

The #1 thing you need to remember is: Advertises will pay ONLY if it is beneficial to them. If your blog is not yet established or receiving a decent amount of traffic advertisers will likely not be willing to advertise on your blog just yet. Remember advertisers are paying for exposure, if you can't offer that you are not ready to start advertising on your blog.

So, start out by asking yourself the following questions:

1) What does your blog have to offer? Who is your target audience?

2) How are your blog stats?

3) How many followers do you have across the board, Facebook, Twitter, GFC

4) What is your monthly traffic rate? Is that rate increasing each month?

5) How often and regularly do you post to your blog?

All of this information will not only help you gauge what you should charge for advertising on your blog and it will help you when writing your media kit or advertising information page.

Now, a great way to find out a good starting rate is too find similar blogs in your niche. Look at blogs with similar stats, followers, etc... and what they charge- I am not saying to charge the same price but this is a good starting point for you to fluctuate either higher or lower based on your own blog stats.

Now, if you are anything like me you want to see actual price examples. So I have put together a VERY broad, general guideline. BUT remember, every blog is different and this structure may not work for you! This is just a good starting point, you can then either raise or lower your prices accordingly. I by no means claim to be a professional at determining what blogs should charge for advertising, this is just my opinion after researching SEVERAL blogs. Secondly, there are a few ways to determine what you should charge for ad space one is based on CPM (Clicks per 1,000 impressions) BUT I will not be getting into that too much, I decided it may be easier if we just went by page views per month for a guideline.

I did research several blogs and found that most fit into this structure. (Please note: the advertising prices I looked at were on niche blogs: mom blogs, book blogs, photography blogs, life blogs, etc... I found that LARGE audience blogs were on a much higher pay structure almost double what you see below. When I say large audience I mean they appeal to a wide range of people are are on a larger scale, well over 100,000 page views a month.)

10,000 up to 30,000 page views per month

$10.00- $15.00 per month for a small ad space

$15.00-$20.00 per month for a medium ad space

$20.00 -$25.00 per month for a large ad space

30,000 up to 50,000 page views per month

$15.00 to $25.00 per month for a small ad space

$20.00 to $30.00 per month for a medium ad space

$25.00 to $35.00 per for a large ad space

50,000 up to 70,000 page views per month

$25.00 to $35.00 per month for a small ad space

$30.00 to $40.00 per month for a medium ad space

$35.00 to $45.00 per for a large ad space

70,000 up to 90,000 page views per month

$35.00 to $45.00 per month for a small ad space

$40.00 to $50.00 per month for a medium ad space

$45.00 to $55.00 per for a large ad space

Basically it works out to be about .50 per 10,000 page views. To some this may seem low but once you hit over 90,000 page views a month you may be able to get closer to $1.50 per 10,000 or more. Once you are on a higher scale in regards to page views you may have larger advertisers that are willing to pay more than a blogger to blogger advertising rate.

Again, this is just a general price structure to get started. You may need to alter these prices based on what you feel your blog has to offer.

Discounted Rates- Now you may want to offer the option of discounted rates for longer terms. Here are a few examples:

Small ad space

1 month: $10.00

3 months: $25.00

6 months: $50.00

Medium ad space:

1 month: $15.00

3 months: $40.00

6 months: $80.00

Sponsorship Posts- Another option is to ad in the option of a sponsorship post, you can either include it with the price or charge for it. If you plan on charging for it a fair price would be $5.00 to $15.00 depending again on your page views and other stats. It's nice to include this for your advertisers that are paying for the more expensive ad spaces and then you could always ad it as an add on option for those advertising in your other spots.

Premium Ad Space- you can also offer premium ad space which usually consists of ads above the fold (basically this is ads you see right when you land on the page without having to scroll down) and ads in the header section. These would be more than your largest ad space in the sample rates above.

A few general tips to remember when selling ad space on your blog:

  • Never charge less than $10.00 for ads 125x125 or larger
  • Do not offer advertising if your site does not receive a decent amount of traffic and especially if you just started blogging
  • If you find your ads are selling out quick, try raising your prices after a month or two.
  • If you find you are not selling ad space at all try lowering your ad prices by a few dollars per month
  • Display your most expensive ads at the top and work your way down the sidebar based on price

Weird... my full comment didn't show up. Here is the second part again that was cut off:

But using your numbers the price per 10,000 pageviews actually comes to $5.55, not $0.50. If 90,000 pageviews equals $50 avarage ad price, then 10,000 pageviews equals $50 devided by 9 = $5.55. Similar with all the other numbers.

So you must have meant $0.50 per 1,000 pageviews, or something else is wrong in the equation. Would you please clarify, as this makes the whole pricing structure doubtful with a 10-fold mistake somewhere. Otherwise the article is extremely helpful. Thanks!

Emily, I love the article, but the math appears to be incorrect. You say:

Basically it works out to be about .50 per 10,000 page views. To some this may seem low but once you hit over 90,000 page views a month you may be able to get closer to $1.50 per 10,000 or more.

I've just started advertising on my blog (this is my first month!)  My prices are similar to what you've laid out. (http://heathernow.blogspot.com/p/pr-info.html )  My challenge has been figuring out how to seek out people who are interested in advertising.

I'm actually in the process of putting together some new advertising and promotion options for my readers, in celebration of October being Women's Small Business Month. I know from experience that I don't make too much money from the ad's in my side bars, so I don't want to sell ad's there-- I feel like the main benefit people could get from that would just be "brand awareness", not really that many clicks-- so I don't want to offer that as a paid option.

I started today with my first new service-- The Trusted Direct Sales Directory -- It will be a huge resource filled with options for moms who would like to find a new way to earn money for their family! Only one rep from each company will be accepted, and in addition to being listed on the directory, they'll also get a once a month dedicated post on my blog, plus a fb and tweet to promote their social media. I'm super excited about it!

I feel that offering sponsored posts, services, etc, will be more valuable to the people who are paying, than me just selling ad space. It will be more work for me -- and you know, heck, I have so much free time already, lol-- but I'd rather sell a SERVICE than sell some bloggy real estate. Feels more fun, and makes me feel like I "earned" the money for that company!
