For many of us, we spend a great deal of time on our blogs and we put a lot of effort into making them perfect! One of the things many bloggers contemplate about is the decision to go custom!

We want our blogs to look great and have that special touch that makes them unique and one of a kind and this is how we end up questioning whether we should go custom or not!

So is it worth it? That depends! A new blog design has many pros and cons! Here are just a few:

Pros:

A unique look that is all your own

A design that represents you and your blog

A layout that works best for you

The ability to have your blog set up exactly the way you want it

Cons:

Custom design can get pricey

Custom design is more long term, if you decide your style or design concept has changed you are out the money you put into it!

Ability to make changes is limited

Overall, most people are beyond satisfied with their decision to go custom but mostly because it was something they put a lot of thought into and the time was right.

Before deciding here are a few things to ask yourself:

Are you on the fence?

When in doubt- wait it out! If you not not 100% sure then maybe right now is just not the right time! Give yourself some time to think about it- rushing into anything is never good and the same goes for custom blog design! Use your time to browse designers, look at other designs, and decide on what you really want -this may make your decision easier!

Are you ready to commit to the same design for awhile?

With custom blog design comes commitment! If you get tired of things quickly and need change often then it may be best to choose a different route, there are plenty of alternatives to custom design that can still get you a great look for your blog! For other options you can check out: How To Give Your Blog A Bit Of Style!

Do you have a clear vision of what you want?

There are tons of style options when it comes to custom blog design! Do you know what route you are looking to go? Do you want character illustrations, do you want a scrapbook look? Do you want a professional look? Do you want 2 or 3 columns, do you want a navigation bar? There is a lot to think abut when it comes to custom design! Sit down and list everything that is important you, research blogs to get a sense of styles and layouts that you like that you can reference when you find a designer. If you are not clear on what you want, wait until you are before going custom- you'd hate to find that what you thought you wanted wasn't what you wanted at all!

Is a custom design in the budget?

If not, don't go broke over it! Custom design can get expensive- if your budget doesn't allow for it save up. Designers will always be there and so will your blog so there is no need to rush!

Let me know what you think works good, and what you think I could improve :) Also, the navigation bar isn't done... I need to make new categories, and the bottom level of the bar will have cool icons, and will link to all of my other sites: facebook, twitter, linked in, pinterest, youtube, tumblr, and more!

@Multi-Testing Mommy- can't wait to see your re-design!

@JamericanSpice- I like the clean, wide layout of that blog and the categories- really cute That is pretty basic I don't think you would pay more than $120.00 but that depends on the designer also. I don't know that you could get the exact layout with the big post on top and smaller boxes on bottom on Blogger- I know it can be done but you might have to pay a lot for that as it would take a lot of re-coding!

I love this design http://www.multimindingmom.com/

But I'd love to have the 3 gadget adding thingies at the bottom.

Love how clean it is.

Any idea if I could get such a design in blogspot and how much it would cost?

Meagan,

Genesis Framework? Still Wordpress? I know very little about Wordpress but there are a few blogs I LOVE the style of that are on Wordpess- I think if I ever start a personal blog I will do it on Wordpress.

I agree looking at other blogs gives you a lot of insight to what you want and don't want, keeping a list- great idea!

Can't wait to see your new design!

I'm just wrapping up a redesign of my blog, Sunshine and Sippy Cups. I've been blogging for a bit over 6 months now, and decided it was time!

I had a Wordpress theme that I had changed up a bit myself, but the options were kind of limited. I wanted a blog that was a little more girly, with some pink. I decided to go with a really great designer that also would move my stuff over to the Genesis framework {I have heard more good things about this than I can count!} and it uses a great theme from Studiopress... I'm so excited to see how it turns out!

You're so right in your advice... If you're not sure yet, wait. It's a big commitment. Plus, take some time while you're deciding to do some research: Every time I would visit a new blog, like during a blog hop, I would take 30 seconds to notice what I liked and didn't like on that blog, and write it down. After a month, I noticed some patterns on my list, and it really helped me figure out what I wanted my blog to look like :)

Once it's done in a few days, I'll come back and share the link, so you guys can give me some feedback on the new look !!
