Earning Money From Your Blog: Tips Before Getting Started!

Many bloggers wonder how they can start earning money from their blogs. We see other bloggers who have ads, offer ad space and seem to be doing great in reference to monetizing their blogs so why not try it? The reality is earning money from your blog is not as simple as one may think and there are a few very important aspects every blogger should consider before adding the factor of advertising to their blog.

Here are a few key factors to consider before getting started:

1) The first thing you must know about monetizing your blog is you will not get rich over night, in fact you may not get rich at all but don't that reality stop you-  some bloggers do make a steady income from their blogs so there is a chance that with time and effort you too could earn money from your blog.

2) The second thing you must know about monetizing your blog is it will take time and effort.  A blog that makes good money is a blog that has some serious time invested into it. Building your blog will be the foundation for earning money from it. Newer blogs are less likely to earn money for multiple reason which we will cover shortly. In regards to time, it may take months (or even longer) before you see a penny of progress but the key is to keep trying.

3) The third thing you must know about monetizing your blog it it will be a lot of trial and error. With so many options it may take time to know what works and what doesn't. Through trial and error you will find what will work best for you but again trial and error will take additional time.

4) If you are a new blogger you may want to put your money making plans on hold. That is sometimes hard to hear but it is much better to wait and build up your blog for greater chances of success. If your blog is new and you have yet to build up your followers, post history, and traffic you will likely not do well in the start. Advertisers are looking to grow or expand their company or product and new blogs do not offer them that option YET. This is not to say that eventually you can not earn some extra money but the beginning period of blogging is not the time.

Is your blog ready?

The first thing you need to do is decide whether or not your blog is ready to start earning money. Anyone can start a blog and put some ads up but you are likely setting yourself up for failure from the get go. One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you is to start growing your blog before you expect to earn money from it. You need to put yourself in the shoes of an advertiser, ask yourself:

What is the worth of your blog? What do you have to offer? If you were an advertiser would you advertise on your blog?

Your statistics and longevity will be a huge make or break factor when it comes to earning money.

How will I know when my blog is ready?

Unfortunately, there is no magic formula to decide when you are ready to start monetizing your blog. If I were to offer advise based on experience I have heard from other bloggers and learned myself I would say give your blog a few months of posting regularly, build up your readership and watch your stats. Advertisers will be looking at various aspects in regards to your blog depending on the type of advertising company. Some may want to see longevity, some may be looking at post history, some may be looking at your niche and what you post about, some may be interested in the traffic you generate as well as other stats such as followers via your blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc....,  if you plan on selling ad space they will defiantly be looking at your readership and visitors. So as soon as you have a few months of steady posts you can apply for affiliate marketing and have a greater change of being accepted. As soon as you see your monthly stats increasing and have a good flow of monthly traffic you will be more likely to sell ad space on your blog. Again, go back to the questions above: What is the worth of your blog? What do you have to offer? If you were an advertiser would you advertise on your blog? When all of these answers point to the positive- you are most likely ready!

What should I do to get my blog ready for advertising?

In the meantime start posting regularly, building back links, growing your readership, and generating some traffic to your site. If you don't have a Twitter or Facebook account those could help as well, the more you network the better.

When I'm ready how can I start earning money from my blog?

There are tons of options when it comes to monetizing your blog. Check out "How To Make Money From Your Blog" for a full, detailed list of options. Keep in mind when deciding on options that you want a product or advertising option that is most inline with your blog niche. If you blog about beauty you should aim to promote beauty ads, if you blog about books you may want to look into Amazon or advertisers that sell books, if you have a coupon/savings blog there are coupon sites that have affiliate programs, etc..... The point is that your readers come to your site for your topic so try to keep your ads as close to that as possible.

Again, check out How To Make Money From Your Blog for information on advertising options and programs.

Remember, earning money from your blog can take time- don't get discouraged! With time and effort you could be well on your way to earning a great deal of money!

This is definitely something that I am considering in the future. I've signed up for websites that allow paid posts. But like you said it does NOT happen over night. Most people won't even give you a chance if you don't have a page rank or your Alexa rating isn't up to par. A lot of time and patience will have to go into this if I really decide to buckle down. But as for now I'm super happy just reviewing products. If I get paid in the process, so be it. I'm just going to enjoy the ride for now.
