DIY Bold and Beautiful Vanity Trays

When treasure hunting for new projects to restyling, I come across gold filigree vanity trays all the time.  Recently, I bought three.  In a few hours (long enough for the paint and top coat to dry), I created two DIY bold and beautiful vanity trays worthy of any bedroom or bathroom décor.  It is very simple and inexpensive project, great for gift giving and require very little in the way of supplies. I did two of them but this tutorial only shows the DIY process for the teal one.

Supplies needed:

  • Outdated  mirrored or glass vanity tray similar to the one above;
  • Vellum paper (like contact paper but permanent);
  • Scrapbook paper or fabric;
  • Spray adhesive (medium bond);
  • Scissors;
  • Spray paint;
  • Clear Spray top coat;

This type of tray usually has a way to take it apart easily much like a picture frame.  I took this one apart. The mirror has a slight crack in the corner which you can't really see here but it couldn't be used.

I spray painted the frame teal and made sure to use polyurethane as a top coat.  Make sure everything is completely dry and not sticky.

While things are drying, you can either use scrapbook paper or fabric to cover the bottom of the tray. When using scrapbook paper, you often have to put to pieces together and it tends harder to make it seamless. I prefer fabric even though it is more expensive.  Measure the fabric out a few inches from the tray's bottom and cut on line.

Spray the tray's bottom with medium adhesive and place fabric on it, smooth out wrinkles, and let dry until not sticky any more.

At this point, I sprayed the back and fold all the extra fabric around the back. Or you can just cut the fabric around the tray bottom flush with the side. I attached all the spacer cardboard on the backside. After it was dried again. Since there was no glass to put over the fabric and there was a mirror there before, I covered the fabric with vellum as a protectant. Now, we put it back together.

This is a simple project but has a lot of décor impact.  It makes a great one-of-a-kind piece of décor for a bathroom or bedroom vanity or dresser.  Here is a  picture of another one I made at the same time and a before and after of this one.  So next time you come across one or have a one that needs a little restyling, just use a little spray paint and fabric and you will have something bold and beautiful for your home.

Note: Neither tray is waterproof nor had it ever been. It is important to add a piece of cardboard as a spacer to make sure the tray bottom is snug and there is no extra space.
