Road Trip!

It was a simple quest.

Andrew and I were going to take a relatively quick 5 1/2 hour road trip to the Capital District so we could get India from college for the summer.

But someone had decided her van wouldn't make the 30° grade of the Driveway From Hell over the winter and parked it. Not in the barn on the hill, where it would be protected. Nooo.  I parked her in the driveway and let her sit - under 3 feet of snow…

School Placements - Happy or Distraught

Many Parents will have woke up this morning with extreme anxiety, I was no exception I felt sick with worry  as I would find out what school my son has been given.
I was worried that my youngest son would end up in a school where he knew no one and would be deeply unhappy.

I suppose I was one of the lucky ones, we were given his first choice, but it wasn't in an ideal world my first choice.
Ideally  we would live in a…

Some Dreams Are Just To Bizarre To Explain

Sitting around with Matthew discussing prescription drug commercials and wondering about the various side-effects.

So many to choose from.  How do the patients know which to select?

I mean, that's why they list them, right?

So you can go to your doctor and tell him which side-effect you would want. I think that is very thoughtful of the drug companies.…

The Mom Version: Twas the Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through our abode,
the only creature stirring was Mom, carrying a load.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
waiting for Mom to fill them with without pulling out her hair.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of the Elf on the Shelf leaving with Santa danced in their heads.
And Dad in his recliner, with the dog in his lap,
was…

Guest Post: Doug Lucas - Why He Writes

Doug Lucas, author of The Flats Teacher's Test, is my guest today with a post about why he wrote a book that one reviewer called "an explosive story...crossing the boundaries...behind the doors of the educational system". To all my teacher friends and parents, this may be worth your time.

The Flats Teacher's Test is ONLY $4.99 for Kindle (or FREE for Prime users) and you can get it here - …

Situations in Which You Can't Fix Stupid

Lately I have been the victim of thoughtless, self-consumed, and, in some cases, stupid women.  Well, not just me, my children have been as well, which really makes me irritated.  The most frustrating part is that these people were so oblivious to what was going on around them, they never even realized that I, among other people, were getting extremely annoyed.  Here are the situations:…

Bottles to Potties: Laughable Advice Parents Should Not Take

Being a new mother is hard.  It is a time that can leave you feeling confused, irritated, annoyed, frustrated, tired, and wonderful all at the same time.  These feelings are often exacerbated by people giving you "helpful" advice that you most likely did not ask for.  No matter where you are, whether it be at the grocery store, the doctor's office, or strolling your baby down the highway (although I might stop and give you advice here because you are obviously in need of some guidance…

School Rules for Next School Year to Prevent a Mommy Meltdown

This school year is coming to an end and we are limping across the finish line (in some cases, literally).  Only two of my kids are in school, I can only imagine what it is going to be like when all three of them are.  Which, as my six-year-old pointed out, will only be one more school year because then the one-year-old will be in a morning program for three days a week and begin taking dance classes.  Oh, and as a bonus, my eight-year-old threw in the statement, "and you will be older then…

Don't Blame Me!

We went to the boys' dentist today for a cleaning, which isn't nearly as traumatic as it used to be for me them.  One of them smashed his little mouth during a fall a few years ago and had to see the dentist for that, which I'm sure is part of the reason he still gets anxious when it's time to go.  And the other one had a cavity (gasp!) filled which, turns out, wasn't nearly as fun as I made it out to be.  I know, weird, right?

So while they are doing better, it's all still a bit… Continue

There has been a lot going on this week.  I was going back and forth, trying to decide what to write about today and figured I would give you a recap of this week's headlines.

The first big story this week was a sad one. Dick…

Have You Seen These Reborners?

OK.  Where to start.  I have to admit, my mind is sort of spinning right now.

My friend Stephanie dared challenged asked me to write about "reborns". She told me to research it, that I would enjoy it.  Ah, she knows me so well.

So I did some research today.

Whoa.

It is a whole other kind of freak fest that I didn't really know existed.

Basically, women (I think hope…

Unspoken Rules Parents Ignore

School programs.  If you have school-aged children, you have been to at least one of these.  If your child has been in school for several years, you have been to a countless number of these.  Still, parents seem to not understand the rules of a school program.  Apparently all politeness goes out in the window with the parents' goal of seeing their child.  Because they are the only child in the program.  At least that is the impression that some parents give.  There are rules, unspoken ones…
