Redshirting: Why We Think We Made the Right Decision

It was during this time two years ago that I was really starting to stress. We had to decide whether to send our daughter to kindergarten in the fall or hold her back a year. Her late August birthday meant she would probably be the youngest in her class or the oldest if we held her back. She turned five the day before kindergarten, and we sent her.

For my husband, there was never an issue. He had a late September birthday and he did fine. She would go. For me, every possible outcome…

Your Family Should Have a Show: The Lion, The Witch and the Fridge

When I open my refrigerator I see the things that you'd expect to see like milk, eggs, and leftovers. Apparently when the kids open the fridge they see into another dimension or into a different plane of existence...

Oh Ikea, How I Love Thee

Saturday was our Ikea field trip with our fabulous friends. Designating "stinky boy car" driven by Phil and "uber fab girl truck" navigated by moi we were off to the land of Swedish furniture and wonderment. As we exited the car we did what any normal person would do before embarking on this shopping adventure, we stretched. After warming up we began walking towards the beautiful yellow building.…

The Twin*tastic Awards

The Oscars were Sunday night and I couldn't have cared less about them this year.  I don't always watch the show, but I usually check in to see which actress is most likely to flash a boob, see how many women are taller than Ryan Seacrest, and see who is wearing the dress that looks like I sewed it myself.  This year, I forgot.  I don't even remember what I was doing instead.  But I wasn't really interested this year anyways.  It probably has to do with the 2 fun…

Back to Work

So I have started back to work part time.  Same employer, more hours.  I can't decide how I feel about it.  I have been working very part time for a few years now.  But I can't count that because as I had explained to you before, my job was pretty easy.  I answered phones, but could watch TV, read magazines and use the computer.  In peace.  Even the occasional phone call, was less of an interruption than my kiddos could be. …

Oscar Fashion From the Stained Carpet

There’s nothing like the Oscars to remind me that my fashion lacks star quality.  While celebrities sashay down the red carpet in Vera Wang and Versace, I spend my days as a mom dressed in the best discount stores and clearance racks have to offer. And it’s not necessarily a bad attempt most days. When I parade down the sidewalk during afterschool pick-up, other moms in their daily uniform of T-shirts and black yoga pants shout, “Karen, who are you wearing?”

“Vintage Mossimo for…
